I was looking into getting a new hard drive but I'm not sure if I want to buy an external or internal. Any thoughts?

External typically costs more.

Do you need to take the data with you away from your PC?

Do you need that much storage or would a flash drive be enough?

If you are looking for performance then go with an Internal. External drives are typically only for backup or large projects in apps like Photoshop or Final Cut.

I imagine you would be fine with an internal, plus they are stupid cheap.

Externals do tend to be slower..but if ur gonna get a new rig in a yr or so this could be easier to switch over..One thing about externals... I found a 80 gb external a few yrs ago for 50 bux after rebate..but what happened?.. it dropped through a crack in my desk. Surprise! it broke!.. three foot drop. Something to consider...

Heres a 250 gb external for $50.. bux..http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168 22101137

and here are about ten 320 GB internals for $50..I'd go with a seagate,, but im no expert with hard drives...http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=E NE&N=2000150014%204025%20103 530105&name=250GB%20-%20320GB

Out of those i like this $45 one the best..http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168 22136010

Don't forget to read the reviews...

From what ive read/learned/overheard. You cannot install/run most programs from most external harddrives. They are mostly used for data storage. If you want something to run games and what not off of, then go internal.

Harddrive technology has not really changed too terribly much in the last 10 years. It's the one thing that has changed the least in the evolution of the PC as far as i can tell(Mind you the space has changed CONSIDERABLY!) . So if you do buy an internal, I would not be suprised if you COULD use it in a future PC you may build down the line 5-6 years from now.

But.... I do hear rumors about new hard drive technology. Hard drives that are completely flash memory based. No more disks and platters, no more internal moving parts which means these could take alot more punishment/rough treatment. These aren't practical though because flash memory isn't fast enough yet.

I could be getting some details wrong.

Relative to my hard drive, I went through all the maps and admin plugins I've downloaded over the last few years. I deleted everything I didn't want and cleared 4 gb. :middlefinger:
